“Your Web Camera Told You To Do WHAT?!”

Episode 1 of 22 (New episodes will run on the 1st and 15th of every month all through 2018.)

How much privacy do you really have online, and is there a way to get more of your privacy back? If you know anything about advertising, you know that Facebook’s proposition to advertisers is that, because they collect so much data about their users, businesses are better off advertising with them than with pretty much anyone else.

Despite this pitch, Facebook ads are not necessarily the best or most effective form of advertising, but they certainly do collect a lot of data, as do other social media sites. And that data collection does make many of the online services we use easier and more convenient. But does that mean that you have to sacrifice your privacy? In this chapter, I’ll explore some of the ways you can protect your online privacy.

Some highlights from this episode include:

● Why you should put tape over your webcam
● Which browser is the most secure
● Which search engine allows you to search without tracking your activity
● Which messaging app is most secure
● Which adblocker you should choose
● How to opt out of many ad networks that track your browsing history
● Which browser extension can provide a more secure connection between your browser and certain insecure websites
● How to delete your old social media accounts
● How often you should update your passwords
● What to do if you’re the victim of a data breach

Quotes:

“Like most Americans, I don’t like the idea that companies are making billions off my personal data.”

“Your data is worth a fortune.”

“I think we’re at a cultural tipping point where these settings are increasingly expected by consumers and tech companies will have to provide them.”

Errata:

Roger says “Alphabet Squared” in this episode. That’s totally my fault. I didn’t take all the footnotes out of the script. There are (thankfully) only two mistakes in the audio edition. This is one of them.
